Police chief calls for more effective bullets

Police officers should be given more effective bullets so they can down a suspect with a single shot, Gelderland police chief Henk van Zwam told website nu.nl on Thursday.

Van Zwam was speaking after two of his officers were acquitted by a court in Arnhem on charges relating to the shooting of a 40-year-old man in 2010.
Zwam said the man may have survived the shooting if the police had had better ammunition. The man died after being shot eight times; six times in the leg after which he ran off and then again twice in the chest after he was brought down by a police dog.
Van Zwam said he was shocked when he realised how ineffective the bullets were. ‘This was a drama for the family and the police officers,’ Van Zwam said. ‘You never forget something like this.’
