A 2-3 victory for Feyenoord against Frisian team Heerenveen gave the Rotterdammers second place in the Dutch premier league on Sunday and a place in next season’s Champions League qualifying competition.
PSV Eindhoven, which finished just one point behind Feyenoord, beat Excelsior 3-1, ensuring the Rotterdam side is relegated to the first division next season.
Excelsior, promoted to the premier league in 2010, will be replaced by FC Zwolle. Other promotions and relegations take place between the two professional leagues according to a complex system.
In European competition, PSV, AZ and Heerenveen will take part in the qualifying competition for the Europa League.
