The Amsterdam daycare child abuse scandal led to 440 follow-up investigations in 52 countries and 33 arrests so far, Dutch police said on Wednesday.

The inquiries led to arrests in the US, Canada, Britain,Poland, Germany and Sweden, police said. In the Netherlands, 14 people were arrested after 68 follow-up inquiries. One man committed suicide while in custody.
In total, police looked into 1,100 people believed to have had some form of contact with paedophile Robert Mikelsons, often using secure internet channels.
Jailed
Mikelsons was sentenced to 18 years in jail earlier this month for abusing 67 very young children in his care.
The case came to light at the end of 2010 after the authorities in the US sought information about a child abuse victim they thought came from the Netherlands. The photo was shown on a television crime show and Mikelsons arrested the same evening.
Detectives distilled over 46,000 photos, 3,500 films and 58,000 pages of chat sessions found on hard discs and memory chips at Mikelsons’ Amsterdam flat into 508 cases worth following up.
A number of those cases are still being investigated, the public prosecution department said in a statement.
