Turkish president meets queen, lays wreath on first day of visit

Turkey’s prime minister Abdullah Gul officially began his three-day visit to the Netherlands on Tuesday with a welcome by queen Beatrix at the palace on Dam square in Amsterdam.

The area around the palace was closed to traffic and there was heavy security ahead of the visit. However, few of the Netherlands’ estimated 400,000 Turkish nationals turned up to see the president and his wife lay a wreath on the war memorial.
One person was arrested – the man who disrupted the Remembrance Day wreath-laying ceremony two years ago refused to leave the area when asked to do so by police.
The visit is part of celebrations to mark 400 years of diplomatic relations between the Netherlands and Turkey.
