Thousands of children may have been ‘groomed’ online

Tens of thousands of Dutch children may have been approached by paedophiles via internet chat sites, according to research by magazine J/M for NCRV television.

Some 950 parents took part in the survey. Of them, 2% said they were aware their child had been in an online conversation with an adult posing as a child. Another 2% suspect this may have happened.
If this is representative of the entire population, tens of thousands of children may have been in contact with potential abusers – a process known as grooming, Trouw reported on Tuesday.
It is not illegal for adults to talk to children via the internet, even about sex, the paper points out. Trouw says most parents would like a change in the law so it would be illegal for adults to pose as children online.
The magazine’s findings will feature in an NCRV programme on Tuesday night.
