Tax office looks to skip provisional tax demands

The tax office is hoping to largely dispense with provisional tax demands so that people are told immediately how much extra tax they have to pay or will get back.

‘The intermediate step involving the provisional return can be scrapped for a lot of people,’ junior finance minister Frans Weekers is quoted as saying. ‘People will get clarity sooner and we will send less blue envelopes, so everyone benefits.’
Some 40,000 people will get a definitive rather than a provisional tax demand over the next few weeks as part of a trial of the new system.
