Tax office can’t hand over income information to landlords: court

The tax office has been told to stop providing landlords with information about tenants’ incomes until the law to make this possible has been passed in parliament, website reports.

Judges in The Hague on Friday ruled in favour of a group of tenants who had gone to court, saying the practice was illegal and infringed their privacy, said.
The cabinet wants to allow landlords to increase the rent of high earners in social housing by an extra 5%. To do this, landlords have been asking the tax office if tenants earn more or less than €43,000 a year.
The government had said the tax office could provide this information even though the legislation has not yet been passed.
It is not clear when the law will come into effect.
