Police unions are likely to step up their campaign for more pay and better working conditions, following the parliamentary agreement to freeze their salaries for a further two years.

‘This is a political agreement which is unacceptable to the police if it does not apply to everyone,’ union officials told news agency ANP.
The unions point out local government workers managed to win a 2% rise over two years, despite the nominal pay freeze for all public sector workers this year.
‘We do not accept police officers’ salaries being frozen. We will carry on campaigning for just pay and conditions agreement,’ a spokesman said.
Police in the four big cities staged a four-hour down-tools earlier this month in support of their pay claim. In other areas, they have stopped handing out traffic fines.
However, the days of ‘public-friendly’ action are now over, the spokesman said. ‘People are going to be affected,’ he said, adding that major events requiring a major police presence could be hit.
