Police officer who shot footballer will not face prosecution

A police officer who shot dead an amateur footballer out celebrating his team’s league title win will not face prosecution, the public prosecution department said on Monday.

Michael Koomen, from Amstelveen, was killed when the police officer discharged four shots. His brother Nick was injured and a third man shot in the stomach.
The prosecution department said the officer, a dog handler, had tried to discharge warning shots when he was attacked by the group of young men in Amsterdam last May.
The shooting generated widespread media coverage at the time.
The fact that Michael Koomen was trying to calm his teammates down is ‘a tragedy’, the department said in a statement.
