Police hand out fewer traffic fines

The police handed out 2.2 million traffic fines in the first three months of 2012, down 200,000 on a year ago, according to justice ministry figures.

Last year as a whole, police handed out nearly 10 million fines for speeding, driving through red lights and other traffic offences.
A drop in fines generated by speed cameras accounts for some of the reduction, but why that has happened needs further investigation, the public prosecution department told news agency ANP. For example, road works or even improvements in driver behaviour could play a role. ‘Fines are higher and perhaps people have become more careful,’ a spokesman said.
Industrial action by police in support of their pay claim has also influenced the figures. Police in some areas have been deliberately handing out fewer fines since the beginning of March.
