MPs say yes to extra rent increase for high earners

A majority of MPs on Thursday voted in favour of a new law which allows landlords to increase the rent of high earners in rent-controlled properties by an extra 5% above inflation.

The government hopes the measure will persuade people to move to more expensive rental property or buy their own home. In theory, only people earning below €34,000 a year are entitled to rent-controlled property.
Tenants organisations are currently taking legal action against the move because landlords are able to ask the tax office if tenants earn more or less than €43,000 a year. Judges in Amsterdam are due to rule on Friday.
