Minister opposes extra tax on banking bonuses

MPs and junior finance minister Frans Weeker are at odds over calls for a tougher tax regime for excessive bonuses for bank executives, Trouw reports on Thursday.

A majority of MPs support a motion from the Christian Democrats which would introduce higher taxes on bonuses of more than 25% of annual salary. But Weekers wants to confine the extra 5% tax rate to performance-related bonuses which are more than 100% of the banker’s annual salary.
CDA parliamentarian Pieter Omtzigt is not willing to withdraw his proposal and says Weekers’ plan is pure symbolism. This is because it implies a bonus of 99% of annual salary is acceptable, Omtzigt said.
