KPN drops plans to take over cable firm Caiway

Telecoms company KPN has abandoned its plans to take over cable firm Caiway because of objections from the competition authority NMa.

Last August, the NMa blocked the sale of the small cable service provider, saying it would ‘strongly limit’ competition, and calling for more research.
‘The takeover would lead to both the cable and the copper network in the west being owned by the same firm,’ the NMa said at the time. ‘This will limit consumer choice in terms of television services, internet access and fixed link telephony.’
KPN said in a statement the decision not to acquire Caiway does not affect its 2015 broadband market share target of more than 45%
