A man who sexually abused his 11-year-old daughter who ended up pregnant was jailed for 10 years by a court in Groningen on Friday.

The girl gave birth to the baby unexpectedly while on a school trip. Now 13, she told the court she thought the abuse was normal fatherly behaviour.
During the police investigation it emerged the man had been convicted of raping an older daughter from a previous relationship in 1995. However, the courts failed to look at his criminal record during a custody hearing when he was given responsibility for his youngest daughter after her mother disappeared.
According to website nu.nl, the court said it was sentencing the man to a longer term in jail because of the shock waves his crime had sent through society. In addition, the baby will remind the girl of the abuse she has suffered for the rest of her life, the court said.
The girl and her baby are now living with a foster family and act like sisters, the foster mother is quoted as saying.
