Evangelical broadcaster apologises for Jesus quiz

Evangelical public broadcaster EO has apologised for broadcasting a quiz on Easter Sunday night which was designed to test how much Dutch people know about Jesus.

The Great Jesus Quiz featured two teams answering questions about the days leading up to Jesus’s crucifixion. The teams were captained by Syb van der Ploeg, leader of band De Kast, and musical star Danny de Munk who played Jesus in The Passion.
The show attracted 400,000 viewers but generated a number of angry complaints from people who said it was without content and in some cases even blasphemous.
Stupid
‘The quiz was not about Jesus but about stupid Dutch people who don’t know anything about him,’ viewer Anja said using the microblogging service Twitter.
The NRC reported that the broadcaster had received several dozen phone calls from viewers and a ‘couple’ had cancelled their membership.
The show was part of a package of EO programming designed to focus attention on the Easter story. However, the quiz allowed the humour to overshadow the content,’ the EO said.
‘In retrospect, we got this wrong,’ EO spokesman Marco van der Straaten told the paper.
To make sure no-one else gets upset, the EO has withdrawn the show from the television repeat service Uitzending Gemist.
