Economic crisis leads Dutch to cut down on holidays

Almost one in five people will not go on holiday this year, while a further 25% will take one holiday rather than two or more, according to research by family spending institute Nibud.

The 18% of people staying at home say they either have no money to go away or have to make savings. Almost one of four of those who are making holiday plans say they have less to spend.
Holiday pay is traditionally paid out to both workers and people on benefits at the end of May. Some 50% of the people questioned by Nibud will use the money to pay for a break, 24% will save it and 15% will use it to pay debts.
