Daycare abuse trial: victims demand damages totalling €1m

A lawyer representing 47 children involved in the Amsterdam daycare abuse case, is demanding total damages of over €1m for the victims, he told the court on Monday.

Richard Korver says each child who was abused should get €8,000 plus a further €8,000 if they were photographed. Each affected family should also get €8,000 for damage to their family life. In addition, the victims and their families should be compensated for the cost of therapy and lost income, Korver told the court.
Chief suspect Robert Mikelsons is on trial for abusing and photographing 67 very young children while working as a daycare worker and a babysitter.
Korver told the court the impact of the abuse on the children could materialise at a later date. In addition, many parents feel guilty that they did not protect their children or realise the abuse was taking place, the lawyer said.
The trial will continue on Thursday.
