Complaints about care of elderly dominate union hotline

Over 1,000 people registered complaints to a special union hotline set up to record problems experienced by people working in the care services.

Most of the complaints came from people working in nursing homes, and ranged from staff being allocated seven minutes to wash and dress a patient to unsupervised patients having accidents, union Abvakabo said on Wednesday.
In particular, the increase in flexible rostering and use of temporary staff is causing problems in care homes, with patients suffering under a lack of continuity in who looks after them. In addition, more mistakes are made with medicines when staff change all the time, the union said.
Many of the complaints were anonymous because of staff fears they could lose their jobs.
