Amsterdam council should buy new Eye institute, says ING

ING is insisting Amsterdam city council honour its commitments and buy the new Eye film institute building on the banks of the IJ after the financial services group failed to find another buyer.

The Volkskrant reports that the city agreed in 2009 it would buy the building from ING if no-one else came forward within three months of completion.
However, a spokesman for city council executive Maarten van Poelgeest told the Telegraaf the council is not prepared to do so because other potential purchasers have come forward. In particular, the bank has failed to respond to one €20m offer, the paper claims.
The biggest stumbling block appears to be financing the takeover, the Telegraaf says.
The ultra-modern white building opposite central station was formally opened by queen Beatrix last week.
