The maximum speed limit will go up from 120 kph to 130 kph on some 45% of the country’s motorway network on September 1, transport minister Melanie Schultz van Haegen told MPs in a briefing on Thursday evening.

The speed limit on a further batch of motorways will take place later when safety standards have been improved, the minister said.
The minister had planned to introduce the higher speed limit on 60% of motorways after the summer but was called back by MPs because of safety fears.
Experiments with 130 kph on a few roads have been running since last year.
