Police take industrial action over pay

Police in Flevoland, Gooi and Utrecht stopped handing out fines for minor offences on Monday afternoon, in support of their campaign for better pay and working conditions.

The three main police unions had threatened to take industrial action from midday on Monday unless justice minister Ivo Opstelten came up with a reasonable proposal.
‘We have not had a single offer,’ Gerrit van de Kamp of the ACP union told website nu.nl.
The unions are calling for a 3% pay rise and agreements on early retirement. Opstelten has imposed a pay freeze.
The ‘no-fine’ policy will soon be extended to other areas, nu.nl said. The policing of major events such as football matches may also be stopped as part of the campaign.
