Flying Dutchman makes dream a reality, or is it a hoax? (update)

Wednesday 21 March 2012

A Dutch mechanical engineer claims to have succeeded in making a pair of wings which allow him to fly like a bird.

Jarno Smeets says he spent months working on his Human Birdwings project and this weekend managed to fly 100 metres after a short run to take off in a park in The Hague.

The 17-metre wings are modelled on the movement and structure of real bird wings and use two Wii controllers plus parts from a WTC smartphone, allowing Smeets to move his arms freely.

'This was the best moment I've ever had,' the engineer, who is inspired by Leonardo da Vinci and his grandfather, said after landing.

Update March 22: Many people now regard the video has a hoax. Follow the discussion here.

Come on! This is plane fake! Most likely funded by featured brands in the series of videos. And more importantly a disgrace for "Flying Dutch Man" legacy.

I guarantee that we will eventually find out that this is a hoax. I hate that stuff like this is allowed to continue - advertising in the form of something genuine. There should be some sort of penalty for people like this. IMHO

I read last night it is a hoax. I hope not, as otherwise, some1 should withdraw the supposed engineer's degree!

LOL, great clip, undoubetly a hoax looking at the wing shape, he doesn't look to have the strength to flap those giant wings, he needs to lift his own weight and more to gain height against gravity, plus drag of the wings, can he lift around 150kg? I think not therefore I call this A HOAX for sure based on physics.

Anyone who thinks that is real should stay off the you tubes and see a psychiatrist as these people clearly have serious reality issues, or maybe they're just plain stupid.

To those who think believers were stupid:

i bet if u would tell some1 in 1950s one day a machine will fly for hours just on sunlight as energy source she would call you the same.

belief and imagination are two wings to the innovation.

having said that, nothing is gonna clear this moron. he must be pretty much banged up in his nut-size brain.

one didn't believe in him, but on the idea to have a mechanical flying wing.
