Five golds for Oranje at world distance speed skating event

Dutch skaters won four out of six men’s gold medals at the world single distance speed skating championships in Heerenveen this weekend.


The run on the medals table ended on Sunday when both the men’s and women’s teams took gold in the pursuit event. In total, the Netherlands took five gold, five silver and four bronze to lead the medal table by a wide margin.
There were golds for Stefan Groothuis in the 1,000 metres, Sven Kramer in the 5,000 meters and Bob de Jong in the 10,000 metres.
On Sunday, Michel Mulder missed out on gold in the 500 meters by 0.01 of a second, allowing Olympic champion Mo Tae-bum to take the title.
The Dutch women failed to win any golds in the individual events. Best placed was Ireen Wüst who took silver in the 1,500 meters.
