Financial sector future under scrutiny from independent committee

Finance minister Jan Kees de Jager is not opposed to setting up an independent committee to look into the future of the Dutch financial services sector, he told MPs during a debate on Wednesday evening.

Such a committee would need to have a broad make-up, including representatives from consumer organisations, academia, industry and the sector itself, De Jager said.
The committee is the brainchild of the CDA and Labour party (PvdA). They want it to examine how financial stability can be guaranteed in the future and how consumer and corporate borrowing can be maintained at acceptable levels.
The parties also want the committee to examine the consequences of splitting backs into two – one part to focus on consumer banking and the other on more risky activities. De Jager is not in favour of cutting the banks in half.
The EU has a similar committee looking at the financial sector on a European level, news agency ANP says.
