The poor economic climate will lead to an increase in the divorce rate of ‘several thousand’ over the next year, the Financieele Dagblad quotes ING economists as saying on Tuesday.

Divorce goes up when the unemployment rate goes up, possibly because of tensions over money, the ING economists say.
ING expects the jobless total to rise by 100,000 people this year which will lead to 2,000 to 4,000 more divorces.
By contrast, more people get married when the economy is doing well, the economists, attached to the ING Economisch Bureau, say in their new report. An extra percentage on the economic growth figure leads to some 2,000 more weddings.
Nevertheless, marriage is increasingly out of favour. In the 1970s, some 100,000 couples a year got married, but that figure is now around 75,000 a year.
