Dating fraud on the increase

Hundreds of people in the Netherlands were conned out of cash last year after falling in love with a partner via internet who turned out to be a fraud, according to the fraud help desk FHD.

On average, people lost €2,250 but some lost hundreds of thousands of euros to fake partners after falling for a sob story, website nu.nl reports. Most of the 660 victims who came forward are over the age of 50.
In total, 14,000 people reported possible fraud to the FHD. The organisation also received 608 complaints about fraudulent webshops and private sellers.
