The most expensive place council-run graveyard in the country is the Esserveld cemetery in Groningen, where a 30-year lease on a grave costs €6,869, according to research by funeral insurance group Dela.

By contrast, the cheapest council graveyard is in Littenseradiel, a group of hamlets in Friesland, where a 20-year plot costs just €456.
On average, grave costs rose 6.27% last year, but Bodegraven put up its prices by 35%, to €6,176, making it the second-most expensive cemetery in the country, Dela said. The fee also includes the cost of maintenance.
In the Netherlands, graves are traditionally rented for a 20 or 30-year period and then cleared, unless families pay to keep the grave for a longer period.
