Chinese cooking fat heads for Holland

Tuesday 27 March 2012

A first consignment of 20 tonnes of processed waste cooking oil was shipped from the Chinese port of Qingdao en route to the Netherlands on Monday, where it will be used to power KLM planes, Chinese news agency Xinhua reported.

‘This is the first batch of China's oil refined from leftover cooking oil to be exported and the products will be further processed into aviation fuel for KLM,’ the news agency said.

KLM carried out its first commercial flights using bio-fuel in September and began experimenting with the product in 2009. The airline has set up a joint venture, SkyNRG, to develop and supply aviation bio-fuels.

Why does it have to be shipped all the way from China? The fuel used in shipping it so far sort of defeats the environmental benefits. There must be plenty in Holland in rest of Europe. Anyway, it's not terribly difficult to do the conversion process from used cooking oil to fuel. There are many videos on the internet showing how to do it. When I lived in England I used to purchase bio-diesel (much cheaper and cleaner than ordinary diesel) made from used cooking oil that was converted in a warehouse in East London.

Whose fat heads are the Chinese going to cook for the Dutch? Why the Dutch can't cook the heads themselves? It's intriguing...

@ Gerard

As I understand it, shipping is a very efficient means of transport, so it is likely that purchasing from china is cheaper than using the same product from Europe. The same way that it cheaper for the US to buy oil from the gulf and ship it than to pump more out of Texas.

Fly on a plane fueled by Chinese cooking oil??? No thanks, I'd rather wok (walk)? I bet the exhaust will smell good though. Lekker
