Benefit fraud to be digitally tracked

Local councils are to be given more powers to track down benefit fraud and more government agencies will share digital data to make this easier.

Junior social affairs minister Paul de Krom is sending a briefing to parliament later on Tuesday on the subject. He wants data from the social services, banks, the land registry and council administration to be digitally linked, reports the Volkskrant.
De Krom says benefit fraud is ‘stealing council money’.
In 2011, €119m was lost to benefit fraud with €53m of this coming from social security (bijstand). That same year, social security organisations paid out €4.3bn.
