Addiction guru faces seven years in jail for sexual abuse

Tuesday 27 March 2012

Addiction guru Keith Bakker should be jailed for seven years for sexually abusing a number of clients, the public prosecution department said on Monday.

Bakker, a former addict, set up a successful anti-addiction clinic but his empire collapsed after complaints of sexual abuse began to surface at the end of 2010.

Bakker, who has been in custody since April 2011, is charged with abusing a number of women and girls, including two 15-year-olds. The prosecution department says Bakker abused his position as a therapist and took advantage of vulnerable patients.

After first denying the charges, Bakker has since admitted some of them. The verdict is due on April 20.

I know this guy did some terrible things but I feel sorry for him. I watched him a few times on TV and I could quickly and easily see a guy that had never really dealt with his own ego and how that 'powered up' his addictive behavior. As someone who has to deal with these same issues in my own life, I found confronting my ridiculous stupid ego to be fundamental to overcoming my own daily addictive tendencies - tendencies to eat too much, earn too much, smoke too much, want too much attention, to over-achieve, to be in control, and on and on. Only when we deal with this ego issue do we act maturely.
