Primary school pupils start three days of tests

Some 162,000 children in their final year of primary school will start three days of nationwide tests on Tuesday.

The Cito tests are used to determine what sort of secondary school education pupils will go on to. Some 85% of schools use the tests.
This is the last Cito test in its current form. From next year, a national test will be compulsory for all schools but will take place later in the year, after the school choice has been made.
This means schools and parents will have a greater role in determining whether a child should go into vocational or pre-college and pre-university education. Instead, the national tests will be used to monitor school and individual pupil performance.
