Japan releases Dutch environmental activist

A Dutch environmental activist, arrested in Japan two months ago after trying to photograph dolphins being transported, has been released from jail pending a verdict in his trial for physical abuse.

Erwin Vermeulen is said to have pushed a worker at the Dolphin Resort Hotel and faces a €1,000 fine, the Volkskrant reports on Friday. He will be sentenced on February 22.
Vermeulen is a member of the Sea Shepherd organisation which campaigns against whaling.
