Digital film, games and music sales rise

The sale of digital film, games and music rose again in the Netherlands last year but the sale of physical dvds and cds is still six times as big, according to new figures from entertainment industry bodies NVPI and GfK.

However, the sale of physical dvds and cds fell by almost €70m in 2011 to €700m, the industry bodies said.
Music has made the biggest switch to digital so far. Last year 13.5 million actual albums were sold, a drop of 10%. Sales via iTunes and other online services rose 40% to 1.6 million items.
‘It is not so much record labels and film companies as retailers who are being hurt by this,’ NVPI spokesman Wouter Rutten told the NRC.
