Cycle lane signs can be deadly

Posts and poles designed to stop cars using cycle lanes are a major cause of bike accidents, according to researchers at Groningen University.

The researchers estimate the posts have a role in 25% of bike accidents which don’t involve another vehicle. Every year some 50 cyclists die and 46,000 are injured in accidents which do not involve a car or other bike.
The researchers say many posts are badly positioned and impossible to see in the dark. ‘We’ve even come across dark brown and black posts. Who on earth would think of such a thing,’ researcher Dik de Waard told news agency ANP.
Elderly people are particularly vulnerable to accidents involving the posts, partly due to their poorer vision, the researchers say.
Some councils, including Amersfoort and Goes have already agreed to remove unnecessary posts to reduce the risk of accidents.
