Archbishop supports smaller church with strong Catholic identity

Friday 17 February 2012

Utrecht archbishop Wim Eijk would rather have a small church which sticks to Catholic principles than a mass organisation, he told Nos television on the eve of his appointment as a cardinal by the pope in Rome.

'The strongest dioceses are those which have carefully preserved their Catholic identity,' he said. 'That is the future. The future of the church is remaining strong within Christ and his evangelism.'

Eijk said he is a 'doctrinaire' rather than an orthodox bishop. Free Catholics in the Netherlands have accused him of being a 'liar' and a 'despot' because of his conservative approach, Nos said.

Eijk is one of 21 men who will be ordained cardinals on Saturday. He has been archbishop of Utrecht since 2008.

I strongly agree and it was about time someone took a stand on this issue. Klein maar krachtig!

Dr. Johnson had stated "Patriotism is the last refuge of a Scoundrel" Oscar Wilde stated "Politics is the last refuge of a Scoundrel". While I am not that famous but I say "Religion is the last refuge of a Scoundrel." It has always been a mix of patriotism, politics and religion which has been responsible for the killing of the people everywhere in the world and with certainty religion has played a main role in starting of many conflicts.

Very well said. It is so important to remain true to the word, than to have large numbers. As a practicing Roman Catholic it gives me much hope.
"For where two or three are gathered together in my name, there am I in the midst of them." (Matthew 18:20)
