Amsterdam police withdrew 28 firearms licences last year

Amsterdam police withdrew gun permits from 10 people last year because of their ‘mental state’, the Parool reports on Wednesday. Another 27 people temporarily lost their licences because of ‘major irregularities’ and 18 had their licences cancelled after an extra check-up, the paper said.

In Amsterdam, 1,605 people are licenced to carry a gun and almost all were scrutinised again in the wake of the Alphen aan den Rijn supermarket shooting. In that incident, last April, Tristan van der Vlis, who had a history of mental problems, killed six people in the shopping mall before turning a gun on himself.
