Sale of electric bikes on the rise

The Dutch bought 1.7 million bikes last year, down 3.6% on 2011, but electric bikes are increasing in popularity, according to cycling industry body Vereniging RAI.


The number of electric bikes – bikes fitted with a small motor – rose 7%, with cyclists happy to pay an average €1,918 for an extra boost while cycling.
The average price paid for a normal bike rose 4.4% to €960.
