PVV in Limburg under fire over ‘sicked-up halal meat’ comment

The anti-Islam PVV in Limburg is again under fire after one provincial councillor described a Labour party colleague as ‘a piece of sicked-up halal meat made from a Turkish pig’.

The comment was made by PVV number two Cor Bosman in an email to 20 supporters after Labour councillor Selçuk Öztürk gave an interview to a local magazine, the Eindhovens Dagblad reports.
The email, which was sent earlier last year, led another PVV councillor, Harm Uringa, to leave the party. The paper says Uringa resigned because local leader Laurence Stassen did not intervene in the row and continued to support the email’s sender.
Crisis meeting
Stassen told the Eindhovens Dagblad on Thursday evening: ‘We exchanged strong words about this within the group and Cor has apologised.’
However, according to local paper De Limburger, the PVV regional party is meeting on Friday morning to discuss Bosman’s email.
This is not the first time Bosman and the PVV in Limburg have been hit by controversy.

Biggest party

Last year it emerged that Bosman is one of two PVV provincial councillors in Limburg who hires himself as his own party worker. According to the Volkskrant, he earns €13,000 a year for his work as councillor plus €57,000 a year as party support staff.
The PVV became the biggest party in the province after the March 2011 elections with over 20% of the vote. Stassen took the lead in working out a coalition with the CDA and VVD.
The coalition still controls 27 of the 47 provincial seats although following Uringa’s resignation, the CDA is now the biggest party with 10 seats.
