One in five loaves of bread has too much salt

One in five loaves of bread sold in supermarkets and specialist shops in the Netherlands breaks official salt limits, food safety inspectors said on Friday.

Specialised bread shops are more likely to break the limit than supermarkets, the inspectors said.
Some 29% of bread from individual bakers has too much salt, compared with 7% of supermarket bread. However, five out of seven supermarket loaves which break the limit are own brands.
Bread should not contain more than 2.1% salt and talks are under way to reduce this limit still further, news agency ANP said.
