One in five children grows up without both parents

Some 20% of children in the Netherlands grow up in a household without both parents, according to new figures from the national statistics office CBS.

The older a child is, the less likely it is to live with both parents. Divorce is the main reason for the break-up of families and most children remain with their mothers after families separate.
Just one third of 15-year-olds with an Antillean or Aruban background live with both parents, compared with 77% of native Dutch children and 75% of children with a Moroccan background.
