Live porpoise washed up on Wadden island beach

A live young porpoise was washed up on the beach on the Wadden Sea island of Schiermonnikoog at the weekend.

High seas and strong winds may have led to the porpoise becoming stranded.
The animal, a young male nicknamed Hedzer after his finder, has been taken to the dolphin rescue centre in Harderwijk to be cared for.
‘Animals which end up alive on the beach are often sick or injured,’ Eligius Everaarts of the SOS Dolfijn foundation said in a statement. ‘We cannot simply put them back.’ Hedzer has injuries around his eyes caused by gulls.
Several dead porpoise have washed up on Dutch beaches this year.
