Dutchman arrested in Germany with 1.7 tonnes of qat

A 28-year-old man from the Netherlands has been arrested in Germany driving a rented van stuffed with 1.7 tonnes of the chewing drug qat, news agency ANP reports.


Qat, a plant, is legal in the Netherlands but banned in neighbouring countries. The drug is popular with Somalis and people from Yemen for its stimulating effect.
According to ANP the haul has a street value of €100,000.
