Divorce rates peak in January

Many relationships flounder over the Christmas holidays, the Volkskrant writes on Thursday.

Divorce lawyers confirm that divorce rates go up significantly just after Christmas and the New Year, the paper reports.
Lawyer Don Cohen says the days before Christmas are relatively quiet but his phone starts ringing on the second of January. ‘Couples whose relationship is crumbling anyway have been cooped up with each other for days’, he explains the January rush on his services.
Another lawyer, Jean-Marie Vullings from Eindhoven, thinks parents stick it out until the end of the holidays because of the children or ‘because they had already booked and hoped the holidays would bring them together.’
The end of the summer holidays is also a peak time for divorce.
