The Netherlands under pressure on Bulgaria and Romania

The Netherlands will come under pressure at the two-day EU summit in Brussels to give up its opposition to Romania and Bulgaria joining the open border Schengen area, the Telegraaf reports on Thursday.

The Dutch position is isolated – Finland having already given up its opposition.
The Netherlands says it will not agree to the two countries joining the passport-free zone until they do more to tackle corruption and organised crime. Brussels has proposed a phased introduction: first sea and air border controls would be abolished, then national borders.
