Socialist party rises to second place in the latest poll

The Socialist Party would take 28 seats if there was a general election tomorrow, making it the second biggest party in parliament, according to the latest Maurice de Hond opinion poll.

The SP took 15 seats in the July 2010 general election but its support has climbed steadily since then.
The ruling VVD, currently the biggest party in parliament with 31 seats, is unchanged in the poll, while the anti-Islam PVV is down one on last week’s poll at 26 – two more than it won last year.
Predictions
De Hond also asked voters about their predictions for 2012. Some 60% said they thought a European country would go bankrupt and the Netherlands would be hit by a serious recession.
Some 40% expect the eurozone to break up and the same proportion think the cabinet will collapse. And one in five think Oranje will win next year’s European football championship.
