Only one nationality in birth registers, says minister

Dual nationality will no longer be automatically registered in local council registers when changes in the nationality act become law, home affairs minister Piet Hein Donner has told parliament.

A majority of MPs had called for an end to dual registration – which is currently compulsory. The change means people who are born Dutch will only have that nationality mentioned in the births’ register.
The change will particularly effect Dutch Moroccans and Turks, who are automatically given both nationalities at birth.
The new nationality legislation is currently being looked at by the government’s main advisory body, the Council of State.
The legislation will also make it compulsory for people who become Dutch to renounce their original nationality, if that is possible by law.
