Not guilty of a serious crime? New evidence means a new trial

Suspects found not guilty of serious offences such as murder will soon face a second trial if new, compelling evidence turns up, thanks to draft legislation supported by a majority of MPs.

Currently in Dutch law no-one can be tried for the same offence twice.
However, MPs believe new evidence gathering techniques, such as dna testing, offer an opportunity for a second trial.
The new legislation would only apply to cases with a life sentence or involving a death, the Telegraaf said.
