Mortgage debate is unsettling buyers, says developers’ chief

The property developers and building company association NVB has called for an end to the tax break on mortgage loans, saying the current debate is damaging the housing market.

NVB director Nico Rietdijk says in Wednesday’s Financieele Dagblad that the conflicting statements about the tax is unsettling buyers.
‘I would rather not be in this position but the ball is rolling. Every day someone says mortgage tax relief cannot continue while ministers keep saying there will be no change. At a certain moment, consumers will stop believing them.’
Pundits expect a change in the mortgage tax relief system will be on the table at next spring’s talks on making further economic reforms. However, Geert Wilders’ anti-Islam PVV, which supports the minority government on economic policy, has said it will not accept any change.
