Minister announces tougher sentences for human trafficking

People convicted of human trafficking and forced prostitution offences should face 10 years in jail, rather than the current eight-year maximum, justice minister Ivo Opstelten has said in a briefing to MPs.

If victims of trafficking end up being killed because of the situation they find themselves in, the maximum sentence should be extended to life, the Telegraaf quotes Opstelten as saying.
The tougher sentences will also apply to pimps who lure girls into prostitution.
The measures are included in new recommendations on sentencing which are to be put out to consultation.
