Mauro gets one year student visa

Mauro Manuel, the 18-year-old Angolan youth faced with deportation, has been granted a student visa which runs until September 1, 2012.

The visa will then be extended until Mauro, who is studying IT at a vocational training college, has completed his education, according to media reports.
After that, the youth will probably have to leave the country and put his new knowledge to work in his country of origin. That is one of the grounds for awarding a student visa, the Volkskrant said.
The decision by immigration minister Gerd Leers to deport Mauro after nine years caused a political storm earlier this year. The youth has lived with the same foster family in Limburg since he was nine and barely speaks Portuguese.
Leers decided not to use his discretionary powers to give the boy a residency permit because of fears it would set a precedent.
